Schaerbeek is undeniably cool—no doubt about it. Over the past few years, this vibrant commune, famous for its cherries and donkeys, has seen a wave of new restaurants, cafés, bars, and breweries pop up. Today, I’m spotlighting five of my favorite spots to grab a drink—whether you’re in the mood for specialty coffee, cocktails, craft cider, or a German inspired craft beer.

1
JORAN - Cidrothèque
Rue Jacques Jansen 3, 1030 Schaerbeek
Our first stop is also a first—Belgium’s first craft cider bar. Run by Joran himself, this friendly bar with a local feel is one of the few places not only in Belgium but in all of Europe where you can sample a wide range of craft ciders. He also sells them by the bottle. At the Cidrothèque, you’ll find ciders from Belgium, Luxembourg, France, England, Spain, and beyond—perfect for those who are gluten-free or just looking to try something new! …Oh, and did I mention their gallates?
2
FOX DEN
Rue Josse Impens 2, 1030 Schaerbeek
FOX DEN is the former neighborhood cocktail bar Ethylo, which, in the past year, has been taken over and revamped by the owners of Life is Beautiful, Karoline Vlk and Harouna Saou. After a successful crowdfunding campaign and redesign, the bar reopened, featuring a spattering of worldly-inspired cocktails. There’s also some small bites to be had. The biggest draw has to be Harouna, the bartender. His knowledge and skill are unparalleled, making FOX DEN one of the best cocktail bars in the city!
3
Le Barboteur Bierotheque
Av. Louis Bertrand 23, 1030 Schaerbeek
Are next stop is for the beer lovers. Le Barboteur is the epitome of a neighborhood spot. It’s simple layout and no frills approach make it a welcoming place for friends looking to share a beer together. Focusing on craft beer, and often featuring a lot of Brussels brewers, here you’ll find a nice selection of craft beers on tap, as well as a stocked selection on cans. In the winter, you can also get an oven roasted Mont d’Or to warm you up even more.
4
WINOK
Av. Louis Bertrand 48, 1030 Schaerbeek
Just back and across the street, you’ll come to WINOK, a specialty coffee shop and roaster that also serves up some vegan-friendly treats and brunch fare. They roast their own coffee here at WINOK, so if you’re looking for a bag of beans to take home, this is a great place to do so. Oh, and how can I not mention the space itself? Open, Art Nouveau architecture, exposed-brick walls—it really feels like a proper coffee shop.
5
Brasserie de la Mule
Rue Rubens 95, 1030 Schaerbeek
Our last stop is Brasserie de la Mule—a German-inspired brewery in the heart of Schaerbeek. Berliner Weisse, Kölsch, Hefeweizen, and Helles can all be found on their tap list. The brewery has only been around since 2020 but is already a Schaerbeek institution. Beer has been brewed in the commune and surrounding neighborhoods for centuries, and with La Mule, it’s made its return. They also host all sorts of concerts, so keep an eye on their socials!
